Dentist’s employees, patients heartbroken after plane crash

FORT PIERCE, FL (WFLX) – Longtime employees and patients at Dr. Michael Huber’s Fort Pierce dental office were grieving Tuesday with a black wreath on the front door. ”It’s been very difficult for us to tell the patients, ‘I’m sorry but Dr. Huber and his children have perished in a plane accident’. They are all very upset,” Office Manager Jenny Heller said.

Dr. Hubert and his daughters, Abby and Tess, were killed when their Cessna went down in Jacksonville Sunday.

Huber was flying his older daughter back to college at the University of North Florida.

Heller has worked for Dr. Huber for 30 years and started out with him when he became a dentist.

He is more like a family member to her than a boss. ”It is hard to be here because I still see him in every room. You walk by and you can see him laugh. You can see him talking with the patients,” Heller said.

Heller babysat Dr. Huber’s daughters when they were young. She says they were inseparable, and their Dad was always by their side. “I think that the three of them going together may have been a blessing. They would not survive without each other. It would be like breaking off a part of your body or something,” Heller said.

Patients came to the office on Tuesday to leave flowers and grieve with the staff. ”He was such a great person. He was smiling all the time and making jokes and whistling. We’re all going to miss him a lot,” longtime patient Eunice Lewis said.

Friends say Huber has been flying for over a decade and made the flight to Jacksonville hundreds of times.

The NTSB is investigating the cause of the crash Sunday night.

As for Dr. Huber’s dental practice, staff says nearby dentists have been filling in to help with emergencies. They say they still aren’t sure who will take over the practice permanently.

Riviera Beach woman, 52, charged with insurance claim fraud

On April 25 undercover detectives went to Optimum Medical Care and told Nadine Laurent they were injured in a car crash.

A doctor conducted exams of the two and ordered three to four weeks of therapy. The detectives continued going to the doctor’s office in May for treatments and noticed that while they only received electrical stimulation, hot packs and a mechanical massage, an insurance company was billed for more.

In all, the state’s Division of Insurance Fraud found that Laurent was responsible for fraudulently billing Security National Insurance Company $1,335 between the two undercover detectives.

Laurent, 52, of Riviera Beach was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail on Monday and released Tuesday after posting a $3,000 bond. She faces charges of false and fraudulent insurance claim and grand theft.

The investigation into Laurent began when insurance companies and the National Insurance Crime Bureau contacted the division and said they believed Laurent was committing insurance fraud. Through the investigation, a confidential source was developed who helped set the detectives up with Laurent at the medical officer on Military Trail in suburban West Palm Beach.

In many of the visits the undercover detectives acting as patients only received electrical stimulation, hot packs and a mechanical massage. However Laurent would include other services — including manual therapy and sometimes an ultrasound — in the therapy notes given to the insurance company.

Detectives said they believe the undercover operation was busted by mid-May because when they attended therapy, the employees appeared nervous and suddenly everyone was “operating by the book,” according to the affidavit.

On May 23 detectives confronted Laurent about a $500 payment she is known to give to patients after their 10th visit. The source told the detectives about the payment, but Laurent denied any payment existed.

Laurent who denied all allegations, including the 10th visit payment but said she did loan $500 to someone.
